Ronny Chieng

Yichieng, born 21 November 1985 in Malaysia is an actor and comedian. Chieng is
currently a Senior Correspondent on The Daily Show, Comedy Central. He is the
creator and star on the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student. The show
premiered on ABC Australia and Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born in
Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to an Malaysian Chinese family. He grew up in both
Singapore and the United States, living in Manchester, New Hampshire from 1989
to 1994. Chieng appeared with Trevor Noah in 2013 at a comedy festival in
Melbourne, Australia. Chieng was then invited to audition for the role of
correspondent on Noah's Daily Show two years after. Chieng was selected as one
of the 10 most watched comics in the July issue of Variety. In October 2016,
Chieng joined The Daily Show to discuss an Jesse Watters Fox News segment many
thought to be racist. Chieng expressed his opinion with a lot of expletive
concerning the segment of the Fox News, a conservative network. Chieng also
re-visited New York City's Chinatown, where Watters had mocked residents, and
conducted interviews more respectfully with residents in Mandarin as well as
Cantonese. The viral video garnered attention in Slate and Washington Post. In
his youth, Chieng was an Singapore Sea Scout. While he's been in Australia for
a decade, Chieng does not hold citizenship or permanent residence status in
Australia. In 2018, Chieng made a joke about being an apologist during the
Daily Show and later clarified in an interview that he was "100 percent
unafraid of dogs".
